ABSTRACTS FROM HOME The Abstracts set of photographs were taken over the course of three months in early 2003. A portion of the series was included in my final project for Art 261 at PSU. They are intended to provide an insite into the simple compositions which occur in our surrounding environments.
CRACKS
"Cracks" was inspired by the sidewalks in downtown Portland in the Spring of 2003. With a roughly 6 months wet season, Portland's mornings tend to be damp. These cracks show what nature can do when it is left to it's devices, which to me is inspiring.
LINE AND FORM The Line and Form series is an ode to the simplistic approach to "viewing" one's environment. Compositions are nothing without these elements. The set was completed in the spring of 2003.
ORGANIC This series is an ongoing project which started in 1998 with a set of photos taken in my parents house in Lincoln Nebraska. It's since continued with the addition of photos taken at the International Rose Testing Garden in Portland Oregon and most recently at my own home here in Portland.
LIVE!
This is an ongoing project which includes shots of performers and posed compositions. The performers shown in this series are from local Portland bands either in practice spaces or performing live at local venues. Selected photography has been used for print collateral such as CD jackets, posters and postcards of some of these bands.
Almost Milwaukie
June 2004: Show at Conans, Portland OR. Explorations of long exposures gave some wicked ghosting.
Astrid
September 2004: Gallery opening down on SE Water St. in Portland OR. The gallery showcased three local artists and Astrid provided the ambient atmosphere. They were kind enough to pose on the bright red couch for me.
The Bats from the Pyrmaids of Egypt
April 2004: Dantes, Portland OR. This performance by local legends "The Bats" provided a great opportunity to explore long exposures.
Fenwick
2001-2002: Photos taken during various locations and performance. This band was one of the first that I started using longer exposures on during shows.
Ginger Lovely
November 2004: Porky's Pub, Portland OR. Some great shots of this one time "all girl band" that reflect their style with vibrant color and a "happy" feel.
Gradual Meltdown
2004: Fez Ballroom and Tonic Lounge shows. These guys put on one hell of a "live P.A." show. 2 techno artists and a DJ provide some of the phatists breakbeats and rhythms in the local scene. The Fez show (May 1st, 2004) had a special twist with live vocals and saxophone pushing their sound in new directions.
Kate Mann & Bernardo Gomez
Spring 2005: These photos were taken at Paola's, Mississippi Pizza Pub and the Noir during early spring of 'o5. Kate and Bernardo perform origional tracks in a alt-country style that's unique and pleasing to the ears.
Netochka
August 2002: This series of photos were taken in Portland on top of a downtown building. The band used these for promotional materials such as their web site and press packet.
Smidgen
Fall 2003: These photos were taken of the band for their upcoming demo CD and web site launch (www.smidgen.org).
Postcard Series - Image Transfer & Collage
Spring 2004: This seriese of postcards was created using a layering/collage technique with illustration on top of image transfer.
Lilies - Digital Illustration
Fall 2004: These digital illustrations were used for a class assignment at PSU. I've worked on them some since and enjoy the simplicity that they represent.
